STONE HARBOR – Back bay conditions were reportedly choppy Sept. 11 when Stone Harbor police received a 911 report at 1:13 p.m. of an overturned boat with people in the water in the 106th Street bay, in the Golden Gate Road vicinity, according to a police report.
Responding officers saw an overturned rented fishing-crabbing boat. Its occupants were clinging to the capsized vessel about 100 yards from shore.
No longer having access to a marine unit, officers signaled a private boater, Robert Salerno, who went to the dock, had officers Joseph Smith, Daniel Peters and Richard Boyle board his vessel.
They went to the overturned craft where officers assisted six victims from the water into Salerno’s boat and another owned by a second “good Samaritan” Jeffrey Conlin.
Victims, all female, were aged, 53, 26, 29, 28, 22 and 1, and the three officers were transported to a dock in the 10600 block Golden Gate Road by Salerno and Conlin.
All were out of the water by 1:26 p.m.
Once ashore, the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit and Stone Harbor Fire Department boat arrived and assisted checking for injuries, and found none.
Investigation as to the cause of the mishap was undertaken by state police and U.S. Coast Guard.
