SWAINTON – A Dennis Township man has been charged with motor vehicle offenses following a crash on Route 9 Sat., Dec. 11.
Middle Township police said Joseph Jamison, 35, was driving north on Route 9 in a commercial van when he struck a utility pole just south of Fairway Drive, severing it. The van continued north for about one block then left the roadway striking a second pole head on just south of Bay Acres Drive.
Jamison was not on the scene when police arrived. Officers requested a K-9 unit from the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office.
Officer Russ Norcross and his canine partner Olly were able to lead police to Jamison’s Hagen Road home. Sheriff Gary Schaffer said Olly tracked Jamison’s scent 3.25 miles.
Police said Jamison also left documents in the van with his name and address.
Lt. John Edwards said Jamison came to police headquarters Dec. 20 and admitted he was driving the van.
He was charged with careless driving, failure to report a motor vehicle crash and leaving the scene of an accident and faces fines and possibly having his licenses suspended if found guilty.
Middle police were assisted by the New Jersey State Police in their investigation.
Court House fire department and Middle Township fire-police responded to shut Route 9 down to traffic from the scene south to Avalon Boulevard while crews worked to repair damage.
