DENNISVILLE — A tractor-trailer left the roadway, striking a tree and severing a pole before coming to rest a short distance from a nearby lake on Route 47 in Dennisville early Fri., March 11.
Firefighters from the Dennis Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to the scene at approximately 3 a.m. March 11, for reports of one tractor-trailer off the roadway with wires down. Upon arrival, crews found the vehicle to have struck several trees, as well as severing a pole, bringing wires across the roadway in the area of 1153 Route 47, near the Dennisville Lake.
The driver, who sustained minor injuries, was treated at the scene by Belleplain Emergency Corps.
Firefighters contained a diesel fuel leak from the tractor-trailer with the use of oil-dry and hazard-containing “booms.” The Cape May County Health Department, in conjunction with the Cape May County HazMat Team, responded to the scene to control the spill.
Crews from Atlantic City Electric replaced the damaged pole, and Verizon and Comcast crews were on scene to remove wires off of the involved vehicle. NorthStar Marine was on location Friday morning to assist in the fuel spill clean-up.
New Jersey Department of Transportation dispatched units to detour traffic away from Route 47 at the intersections of Petersburg Road & Route 47, as well as Tyler Road & Route 47 as crews worked to reopen the roadway. As of 11 a.m. Route 47 remained closed.
The New Jersey State Police are investigating the accident.
