Search for ‘Missing’ Female Has Happy Ending

By Jack Fichter

AVALON — A search for a female seen in the surf near 29th Street about 6 p.m. Sept. 26 had a happy ending when the presumed missing swimmer called police to report she was safe and sound.
According to Avalon spokesman Scott Wahl, the female received a reverse 9-1-1 message at her home and called police after 8 p.m. to report she had left the beach and was safe. The borough had activated its reverse 9-1-1 system to ask residents if any family member was missing, he said.
Wahl said it had been uncertain if a person was missing. Police were called when a person walking a dog reported seeing a female enter the surf and disappear from view and not exit the ocean.
Wahl said the female had left the beach at 23rd Street.
Firefighters, Coast Guard and N.J. Marine Police were detailed to the beach around 29th Street about 6:30 p.m. searching for a missing female in the surf. It was uncertain if she was swimming or surfing.
About 7 p.m., a Coast Guard helicopter and N.J. Marine Police boat was searching the area. Court House and Stone Harbor firefighters were called for backup in Avalon.
Boats from Avalon Fire ceased searching at dark.
The search stretched from 29th Street to the inlet, said Wahl.
