Scuba Diver Succumbs After First Dive

CAPE MAY — The Coast Guard airlifted a 34-year old scuba diver a boat June 13 from 38 miles southeast of this city. The man was pronounced dead at Cape Regional Medical Center at 12:35 p.m..
A Philadelphia television station identified the victim as North Wales, Pa. resident Nicholas Papageorge, who was making his first dive with five others.
The Coast Guard received a call at 10:17 a.m. from a crew member aboard the dive boat Bubble Trouble reporting a diver had surfaced unconscious and was in need of assistance.
A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City arrived on scene and hoisted the diver from aboard the pleasure craft Baroness into their helicopter.
The aircrew transported the man to Cape May County Airport in Erma, and transferred him to awaiting emergency medical personnel.
