GOSHEN – Middle Township Police Department received a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle crash in the area of milepost 15.1 of State Highway 47 in the Goshen section of the Township May 11 at approximately 4:15 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers found a single vehicle had struck a utility pole as well as a tree. Further investigation revealed Waymon Hawkins, 29, of Court House, was driving northbound on State Highway 47 in a 2006 Volvo S40 when he ran off the roadway, struck a utility pole and then struck a tree before the vehicle came to final rest. As a result of injuries suffered in the crash, Hawkins was pronounced dead at the crash scene.
State Highway 47 was shut down for approximately four hours due to the crash. The crash is under investigation by Middle Township Fatal Crash Team and Major Crimes Unit. Power in the area was down for a short time and was repaired by Atlantic City Electric. Goshen Fire Department, Middle Township Emergency Medical Services and New Jersey State Department of Transportation Traffic Unit also responded to assist at the accident scene.
