BURLEIGH – Middle Township Police Department dispatch received reports of a two-vehicle crash involving a Middle Township Ambulance and a red Chevy Trailblazer at 3:49 p.m. at the intersection of Indian Trail Road and Route 9.
The driver of the Trailblazer was identified as Alyn Toth, 43, from Burleigh. She was flown to Atlantic Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.
The Ambulance was being operated by Joseph Sims, 46, of Erma. Middle Township Police Lieutenant John Edwards confirmed Sims was en-route to a fire that claimed the life of his father Joseph Sims. Edwards said Sims was not responding in an official capacity when the crash occurred.
There was no patient in the ambulance at the time of the crash. The front seat passenger was identified as Paul Hewitt, 24, of North Cape May. The crash is being investigated by Middle Township Police, with the assistance of the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Team.
Court House Volunteer Fire Department responded with JAWS equipment. Rescue units responded from Court House Rescue, Rio Grande Rescue, and Belleplain Rescue.
