By Press Release

ERMA – Lower Township Police Department, along with members of the Erma Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the area of Route 9 and Cresse Lane Dec. 10 to investigate the report of a motor vehicle accident. Initial reports indicated the vehicle had left the roadway for unknown reasons and struck a utility pole before erupting into flames.
Upon arrival, Lower Township Police Officers observed the motor vehicle was in a wooded section of the area and was on fire.
Officers approached the vehicle but did not locate any occupants within. It was quickly learned that citizens, Michael Raspa, Patrick Delconti and off-duty Cape May City Police Sgt. Shawn Austin, assisted the victim from the vehicle and brought her to a safe location.
Investigation into the accident revealed Lorie Sabatino, 43, who resides in North Cape May, was traveling south on Rt 9. For unknown reasons, the 2011 Nissan Altima she was operating left the roadway, and struck and severed a utility pole before coming to rest in a wooded area where the vehicle then ignited.
Sabatino, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. She was charged with driving while intoxicated and was issued several other motor vehicle summonses related to the crash.
Erma Volunteer Fire Department was able to extinguish the vehicle and contain the fire to prevent additional damage.
This investigation was conducted by Patrolman Michael Nuscis, along with Special Officer James Collins.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
