This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
RIO GRANDE – Middle Township Police Department responded to a reported motor vehicle crash involving three vehicles on South Railroad Avenue in Rio Grande July 12 at approximately 12:53 p.m.
The investigation revealed Jeffery Aviles, 26, of Villas, was operating a 2000 Chevy Silverado pickup truck. Aviles was stopped facing northbound, straddling the left turn lane and straight lane approaching the intersection of South Railroad Avenue and Route 47.
Aviles’ vehicle was not moving and vehicles were going around him to continue north. At some point, Aviles’ foot hit the gas and caused his vehicle to rear end another vehicle. That vehicle subsequently struck another vehicle.
Aviles was found unresponsive from an apparent drug overdose. Aviles was revived with Narcan and was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center by Middle Township EMS. There were no other injuries in the other vehicles.
Drug paraphernalia and a pellet gun were found in the vehicle. Aviles was charged with DWI, various traffic offenses, unlawful possession of a weapon, fourth degree, possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly person’s offense, and possession of a hypodermic syringe, also a disorderly person’s offense.
Aviles was released on a summons. Patrolman Thomas Flounders investigated.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
