Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Freak Belleplain Mishap

BELLEPLAIN – A 68-year-old motorcyclist was in critical condition after a freak accident, Sept. 13, on Hands Mill Road and Macellaro Road about 3:30 p.m.
According to a bystander, a tree fell across the roadway on Hands Mill Road while a motorcycle was traveling west on that road. The motorcyclist was unable to stop in time, and the driver was ejected off the motorcycle and “bounced several times,” according to a witness.
Injured was Gerald Baumgarten, a Bridgeton resident, who sustained multiple injuries. Although he wore a helmet, it reported was thrown off during the accident.
Belleplain Emergency Corps arrived on scene and requested Paramedics and a Medevac to respond.
Belleplain Fire Department set up a landing zone at the Sixth Street ball field.
South Star airlifted tBaumgarten, who was reported to be unconscious and unresponsive after the accident, to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Trauma Center in Atlantic City.
The flight crew reported him to be in critical condition with a serious head injury among several other injuries.
The New Jersey State Police Fatal accident investigation team was requested to the scene to investigate.
The accident is under investigation by State Police Woodbine Station.
