Motorcycle Crash Leads to Second Crash Involving Officer

This report is based on information received from law enforcement.
RIO GRANDE – Middle Township Police Department responded to the report of a motor vehicle crash in the area of Route 47 and 6th Street in Rio Grande at approximately 6:40 p.m. Sept. 8. 
When officers arrived, they discovered members of AtlantiCare paramedics providing medical attention to the driver of a motorcycle. 
Investigation revealed Miguel Guzman, Jr., 54, of Vineland, was traveling on a motorcycle southbound on Route 47 when Martin Mahon, 54, of Hammonton, also riding a motorcycle southbound, changed lanes in front of Guzman, Jr.   Guzman, Jr. was unable to stop prior to colliding with Mahon.
Guzman, Jr. was separated from the motorcycle causing serious bodily injuries. Guzman, Jr. was airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment. Mahon did not suffer any injuries and was issued a summons for careless driving.
While officers were investigating the crash, an officer’s patrol vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle. The patrol vehicle was positioned in the northbound lane with its overhead lights activated. 
The vehicle, driven by Lawrence Gallo, 34, of North Wildwood, failed to move to the right and struck the rear of the occupied patrol vehicle. The officer in the vehicle was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center with complaints of back and neck pain.
Gallo was not injured and was arrested for driving under the influence and issued multiple traffic summonses.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
