Monmouth County Man Rescued After Falling Into Bay

By Press Release

AVALON MANOR– During the early morning hours of Sat. Oct. 23, police communications received a “911” call of a man, who had been striper fishing off the docks at Avalon Pointe Marina, had fallen into the bay.
Sgt. Rich McHale, Senior Patrol Officer Rich Sittineri and Patrolman Julio Ruiz, along with Middle Township Rescue Squad, assisted by; Patrolman Craig Smith, of Avalon Police and Avalon Rescue personnel, rushed to the scene, to find John Tierney, 50, of Monmouth county laying in the water and holding on to his brother, Richard Tierney’s hand, along with local residents; Ron Smythe and Joe Kauterman, an off-duty Avalon Rescue Squad member. There was a strong current at the time and they were unable to pull him to safety.
Tierney was pulled out of the water with the aid of police and rescue units. Richard Tierney said that he and his brother had returned from taking their mother out to dinner for her birthday, and took some time to do some fishing, afterwards. Richard said he caught a striper on his line and that’s when “John reached down to pull the fish out of the water.” While doing so, he fell in. Richard said he grabbed his brother’s arm and began screaming for help. After approximately ten minutes, Joe Kauterman and Ron Smythe came down to the dock and attempted to lift Tierney out of the water, without any success. Kauterman then grabbed a rope and tied a knot around Tierney’s wrist and held on until help had arrived on-scene.
Tierney was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center by Middle Township Rescue Squad, for hyperthermia, and later, was released.
