The first occurred on US 9 at Interchange 12 in Swainton at 7:57 a.m. A box truck driven by Winthrop Russell, 45, of Philadelphia, Pa. was traveling North on US 9 when the driver apparently failed to yield to an oncoming vehicle driven by Meghan Carroll, 22. Assisting was Middle Township EMS, Cape May Court House Fire Company, Medic 9 and the MTPD Major Crimes Unit.
The second crash happened on State Highway 47 (Wildwood Boulevard) in the area of the MUA plant at 12:57 p.m. A single vehicle driven by Amanda Stamas of Wildwood was traveling east when for an unknown reason left the highway and struck a utility pole. This caused sporadic electrical outages as well. Atlantic City Electric was on scene quickly to replace the broken utility pole. Stamas was transported to an awaiting helicopter and transported to Atlantic City Medical Center City Division for treatment. Assisting at the scene were Middle Township EMS, Medic 9, Rio Grande Fire Company and MTPD Major Crimes Unit. The cause of this crash is still under investigation.
