ERMA – On Aug. 25, 2018, at approximately 3:05 a.m., Cpl. Anzelone Of the Lower Township Police Department was on routine patrol in Erma when she observed a red sports car traveling at a high rate of speed in the area of Route 109.
Anzelone attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop by activating her emergency lights and siren. After Anzelone activated her emergency lights and siren, she observed the vehicle make an illegal left turn at the intersection of Route 109 and Route 9 and then accelerated.
Due to the manner in which the operator of the vehicle was driving, Anzelone deactivated her emergency lights and siren, discontinued the motor vehicle stop and called in the description of the vehicle and its direction of travel, to Cape May County Dispatch.
At approximately 3:10 a.m., Lower Township Police received a 911 call from a resident of Cape Woods Road in North Cape May, stating their vehicle had just been struck by another vehicle.
The 911 caller stated their vehicle was parked and unoccupied at the time of the accident and a red sports car struck the rear of the vehicle then fled the scene.
Officers responded to the area and were able to locate the red sports car, a 2005 red Ford Mustang, on Cape Woods Road around the corner from the accident scene.
The Mustang was unoccupied and had visible front-end damage. The vehicle was still smoking from the engine compartment of the vehicle when the officers located it.
The officers located the driver, later identified as 24-year-old James Savarese of Villas, walking in the street a short distance from his abandoned vehicle.
Savarese was arrested for driving while intoxicated and eluding police, a crime of the second degree.
Savarese was processed and transported to the Cape May County Correctional Center on a warrant issued by Municipal Court Judge Marian Ragusa.
This incident is being investigated by Anzelone and Ptlm. Bartleson of the Lower Township Police Department.
