Man Charged with DWI and Assault By Auto, Three Teens Injured

ERMA- According to police, an early Saturday morning two-car motor vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of State Highway Route 9 and Kathryn Boulevard.
The accident took place at approximately 12:05 a.m.
Upon arrival, Patrol Officers located three 17-year old females injured in a 2008 Toyota Scion, along with a 44 year-old male, the driver of a Ford F150 pick up truck.
The male was identified as Donald Hayes of the 800 Block of Heather Lane in Lower Township.
Investigation on scene determined that the Toyota operated by the 17 year-old female driver had just made a left-hand turn from Kathryn Boulevard and was proceeding south on Route 9 when the it was struck from behind by the F-150 pick-up truck, which was being operated by Mr. Hayes.
The force of the collision drove the Toyota approximately 140 feet southbound before it went into a left-hand spin, leaving the roadway, and crashed into a wooden fence with part of the fence penetrating the vehicle.
The pick-up truck ran off the roadway and came to rest on the southbound shoulder of Route 9.
Driver of the Toyota and two 17 year-old female passengers were all injured in the accident.
The driver of the Toyota and one of the passengers were transported by Lower Township Rescue Squad to Cape Regional Medical Center, where they were treated for the injuries and later released.
A third 17 year-old female was treated on scene by the Lower Township Rescue Squad and Paramedics before being airlifted to Atlantic City Medical Center/City Division, with multiple injuries including a broken pelvis.
Police confirm that the 17 year-old victims are all Lower Township residents.
The driver of the pick up truck, Mr. Donald Hayes, was not injured in the accident. He was charged by the Lower Township Police with the following offenses:
Reckless Driving
Driving While Intoxicated
Refusal to Submit to a Breath Test
Assault by Auto (3 Degree Crime)
The accident was investigated by Patrolman Patrick Greene and Detectives Art Mason and Joseph Boyle.
