Lower Township Police Report More Accidents, DWIs

ERMA — The Lower Township Police Department has seen an increase in DWI arrests and motor vehicle accidents over last summer.
Lt. William Mastriana, patrol commander for the department, indicated that during the months of May, June and July 2008 Lower Township police arrested a total of 40 motorists for DWI compared to a total of 17 such arrests for the same time period in 2007.
The police department also experienced an increase in motor vehicle accidents from the same time period over last year.
Officers investigated 163 motor vehicle accidents during the period this year compared to 157 last year.
In 2007, officers arrested a total of 91 drunk drivers, while investigating 454 motor vehicle accidents.
The department has also been chosen to participate in the upcoming “Over the Limit, Under Arrest” statewide crackdown impaired driving enforcement program.
The department received a grant to run DWI enforcement patrols from Aug. 15 through Sept. 1 as part of the statewide program.
