The following is based on information received from a law enforcement agency. The person(s) named is innocent until proven otherwise in court.
ERMA – Lower Township Police report that April 14, at approximately 2:21 a.m., Cape May County Dispatch received a call that a motor vehicle was turned over with a driver trapped inside.
According to a release, the caller told dispatch that the vehicle was on the property at 646 Seashore Road, in Erma. Erma Fire Department and Lower Township Rescue were dispatched as well.
Upon arrival, witnesses notified Patrol Officer Adam Hegarty that the driver of the vehicle was able to exit through the windshield before fleeing on foot, north on Seashore Road. Responding officers observed a white 2004 Ford Explorer, turned over, and lying on the driver’s side, with a large amount of the windshield missing.
A witness stated he saw the driver kicking out the windshield from inside the vehicle. A full description of the driver was also given.
Sgt. Robert Smith arrived and requested Cape May County Sheriff’s K-9 unit respond to assist in locating the above driver, who they were concerned, may have been injured. Officers tracked the driver, who matched the description given by witnesses.
The driver, William M. Douger, 40, from Bensalem, Pa. was found lying on the Lower Township bike path approximately one mile north of the crash scene.
Further investigation by Patrol Officers Corey Scheid and Michael Nuscis determined that Douger was operating his vehicle under the influence of intoxicating alcohol and/or drugs.
He was subsequently arrested for driving while intoxicated (DWI). Lower Township Rescue responded and transported Douger to Cape Regional Medical Center where he was medically evaluated.
Douger was also charged with failure to maintain lane; leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident; failure to report a motor vehicle accident; and reckless driving.
