Lower Township Man Crashes Truck with 7-year-old Passenger; Charged with DWI

AVALON – Avalon Police Department has charged a Lower Township man with various offenses following a motor vehicle accident that closed both lanes of Avalon Boulevard for several hours over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Avalon Police, the Avalon Volunteer Fire Department, and Avalon Rescue all responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a 1998 Ford Ranger pickup truck operated by Clarence E. Pike IV, 31, of Villas, Saturday, May 24 at approximately 4:59 p.m. Pike’s vehicle was travelling eastbound on Avalon Boulevard when it left the roadway, crossed the westbound lanes, and struck a utility pole head on. A 7-year-old boy was also a passenger in the vehicle. Pike was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center in Court House, while the juvenile was airlifted to Cooper Hospital. Both were reported to be in stable condition.
After further investigation, Avalon Police discovered that Pike was intoxicated, and his driver’s license was suspended and expired. He was charged with endangering the welfare of a child, second degree crime, aggravated assault by auto resulting in bodily injury, third degree crime, failure to provide health and safety to the public, fourth degree crime, driving while intoxicated and several other motor vehicle violations.
Bail was set by Judge George Neidig Jr. at $50,000 full cash. The arresting officers in the case were Patrolman Mark Glassford and Sgt. Sean McNair.
The charges and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
