Juvenile Moped Rider Hit by Recue Squad Van

By Jack Fichter

ERMA – On Monday Sept. 1 at approximately 10 p.m., the Lower Township Police Department received a report of a motor vehicle accident with a moped and a van on Breakwater Road at the intersection of Hornet Road near the Cape May County Airport Complex.
Investigation determined a moped being operated by a 16-year-old male was proceeding east on Breakwater Road approaching the intersection of Hornet Road, when a white Ford van, registered to the Lower Township Rescue Squad, proceeding west on Breakwater Road, attempted to make a left hand turn onto Hornet Road and struck the moped.
The driver of the van, John Mahoney, 54, of Villas, stated that he did not see the moped or any lights on the moped.
The 16-year-old moped driver advised patrol officers that the headlight and tail lights on the moped were not working, but that he was carrying a small flashlight with him while operating his moped.
The juvenile was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center by Lower Township Rescue Squad for evaluation of minor injuries sustained in the crash. The accident is under investigation by Patrol Officer Robert Fessler.
