The County Board of Freeholders hosted its second annual Hurricane Preparedness Conference Sept 25 at the County Administration Building.
The message: a hurricane would cause widespread flooding in the county even two to five miles from the coast and evacuation must begin early.
It appears the bulk of evacuating vehicles would be directed to Route 47. Both Route 47 and the Garden State Parkway would be made one-way roads creating extra lanes to move vehicles out of the county.
Speakers at the conference included Richard L. Canas, director of the state Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, Major Richard Arroyo, Commanding Officer, Emergency Management Section of the State Police and James Eberwine of the National Weather Service who presented a scenario of what would have happened if Hurricane Edouard had hit Cape May County in 1996.
