Grounded Fishing Boat Crew Rescued

By Herald Staff

CAPE MAY — Three fishermen aboard an 85-foot boat ran aground Aug. 27 in Cape May Inlet.
The Coast Guard received a call at 10:51 a.m. from a member of Seatow reporting the crew aboard the Star 1 aground.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May arrived on scene and assessed the situation.
“The crew of the Star 1 reported they ran themselves aground intentionally when they lost control of their steering when a steering hose ruptured. They wanted to prevent damage to their boat and other boats in the area,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Ben Heinze, a crewman at Station Cape May.
The crew of the Star 1 repaired the ruptured hose and is waiting to refloat during high tide at 6 p.m.
A rescue boat crew from Coast Guard Station Cape May will escort the Star 1 and its crew to Lobster House Marina in Cape May once the boat and its crew refloats.
