The following is based on information received from a law enforcement agency. The person(s) named is innocent until proven otherwise in court.
VILLAS – On Nov. 3, at approximately 7 p.m. the Lower Township Police Department was dispatched to Fulling Mill Road in Villas adjacent to the Cape May County Airport runway for a report of a single-car motor vehicle crash.
Officers found that a 2004 silver Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck had crashed into a tree on the east side of the roadway.
The vehicle was occupied by the driver, Andrew E. Santiago, 31, and a passenger, Melissa Waltz, 39.
Santiago and Waltz both exhibited signs of injury and Lower Township Rescue was summoned. It was later reported that tools had fallen off/out of the above vehicle and struck a second vehicle that was passing by causing minor damage.
It was also noted that the pickup truck was towing a 15-foot flatbed landscape trailer with assorted lawn care equipment. The trailer became unhitched during the accident and was found in the wooded area at the scene.
Officers detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from Santiago’s person. He was subsequently transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation and to have a DWI blood kit administered.
Waltz was also transported to Cape Regional Medical Center and treated for her injuries.
Santiago, once released from the hospital, was transported to Lower Township Police Headquarters, processed and held in accordance with Lower Township Police policies and procedures.
His vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded in accordance with John’s Law.
Andrew E. Santiago was charged with driving while intoxicated, assault by auto, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, and driving while suspended.
