By Jack Fichter

ERMA — Lower Township police received a report of four persons in a sinking 11 to 12-foot aluminum boat July 1 about 3:15 a.m. in Delaware Bay off Higbee’s Beach. The U.S. Coast Guard, State Police, Delaware River and Bay Authority and Town Bank Fire personnel responded to the call.
At about 3:20 a.m., Coast Guard Air Rescue was on scene. Four persons: Jason Mathis, Kim Murphy, Brian Dooley and Kevin Davidson, all of North Cape May and Villas were located. They were treated for hypothermia at the scene by Lower Township Rescue personnel and refused additional medical attention.
Police investigation discovered the four individuals went to the beach in front of Harpoon Henry’s restaurant and used a boat kept at that location. Once the boat began to sink, the occupants made it ashore to locations from Higbee’s Beach to Cape May Point. The boat had not been recovered.
