CLERMONT – Five teenagers were sent to area hospitals after the vehicle in which they were traveling ran off the road in the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway at milepost 15.5.
According to State Police, the one-vehicle accident occurred Feb. 19 at 8:48 p.m. when the 17-year-old female driver of the 2006 Ford Escape ran off the road onto the grass berm.
“The vehicle ran off the right side of the road onto a berm,” said Sgt. G. Williams “The driver then over-corrected to the left and the vehicle crossed the right shoulder and lane and entered the left lane of travel and overcompensated again to the right and lost control of the vehicle.”
According to Williams the vehicle then rotated clockwise across the right lane and shoulder before it impacted a guardrail. The vehicle continued to travel a short distance before flipping over onto its roof in the right lane of traffic.
A 15-year-old female sitting in the rear center as well as the 17-year-old male front passenger were airlifted to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. Both are reported in stable condition, according to police.
“The remaining occupants, all three of them, were taken to Cape Regional Medical Center via ambulance for treatment of injuries,” said Williams.
Williams said the 17-year-old driver was in possession of a graduated driver’s license (GDL).
No summonses have been issued. The accident remains under investigation.
In addition to State Police, Middle Township police, Court House Fire Department, Middle Township EMS and Atlanticare EMS responded to the scene.
