NORTH CAPE MAY — An unidentified boat operator was safe after his boat, about 14 feet in length, overturned about 4:30 p.m. in Cape May Canal Aug. 17 near the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal.
The incident took place in the Cape May Canal near the ferry terminal, according to eyewitness Kim Lynch, a Herald employee.
She said the boater, who reportedly departed from Bree-Zee-Lee Marina, seemed as if he was waiting for the ferry to depart before proceeding, and that the boat took the wake broadside instead of heading into it.
On Monday, Jim Salmon, spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority disputed the report that the ferry’s wake had overturned the boat.
He said that the port captain told him that the vessel’s operator reportedly told rescuers he capsized his vessel, not the ferry’s wake.
Salmon said that the ferry’s captain was aware of the incident, and reported the situation immediately to the U.S. Coast Guard and a dredging company boat, working in the vicinity of the terminal., That vessel plucked the man from the water.
“The incident is under investigation,” said Salmon.
Town Bank firefighters and Lower Township Rescue Squad was summoned to the scene as was the U.S. Coast Guard and SeaTow, a commercial marine towing service, which righted the vessel, which had been upside down for about half an hour, Lynch said.
