COURT HOUSE – Throughout 2017 in Cape May County there were 16 fatalities that resulted from 15 motor vehicle crashes, according to New Jersey State Police statistics.
Those figures compare with 12 fatalities and 11 crashes in 2016.
Middle Township accounted for five crashes and five deaths.
Dennis Township had four crashes and four deaths.
In Upper Township, three crashes accounted for three deaths.
Lower Township recorded two crashes with three fatalities.
Pedestrians
Cape May City recorded a pedestrian fatality Dec. 16 from a Dec. 13 crash on Texas Avenue at 7:14 p.m.
That fatality and another one in Lower Township Dec. 16 on Route 9 at 5:21 p.m. were the only pedestrians killed in crashes.
Worker on Truck
A worker on the rear of a trash truck died on Highs Beach Road, Middle Township June 6 as the vehicle’s rear hit a utility pole.
Route 347
On Route 347 in Dennis Township, July 16, a life was lost at milepost 1.4 at 5:32 p.m. It was the only fatality recorded on that roadway in 2017.
That heavily-traveled highway was part of a traffic study by South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization in connection with Route 55.
County Roads
Seven roads that fall under the county’s jurisdiction accounted for eight fatalities. From earliest to latest they were:
Indian Trail Road (C.R. 618), Middle Township, March 23, 12:06 a.m., one fatality.
Dennisville-Petersburg Road (C.R. 610), Upper Township, milepost 5.4, 5:22 a.m., one fatality.
Seashore Road (C.R. 626), milepost 4, Lower Township, July 9, two fatalities at 5:27 p.m.
Woodbine-Ocean View Road (C.R. 550), milepost 14.8 at Stoney Court, Sept. 4 at 5:04 p.m., one fatality.
Webster Avenue-Fidler Road (C.R. 638), milepost 1.5, Sept. 10 at 10:42 a.m., one fatality.
South Seaville-Corson Tavern Road (C.R. 628) at milepost 2.6, Oct. 13 at 9:28 p.m., one fatality.
Tuckahoe Road (C.R. 631), at milepost 3.7, Nov. 16 at 6:14 a.m., one fatality.
Garden State Parkway
Also in Middle Township, on the Garden State Parkway, Oct. 30 at 7:36 a.m. at milepost 7.3, one fatality took place.
On Nov. 7 at 1:22 p.m. at the Garden State Parkway’s milepost 13, one fatality occurred.
Route 50
In Upper Township Sept. 8 at 11:15 p.m. on Route 50 at milepost 3.2, one life was lost.
Route 47
In Middle Township on Route 47, Jan. 19 at 2:52 p.m. at milepost 6.8, one fatality occurred.
