MARMORA — Tragedy struck an Atlantic County family on Sun., May 15 on the Garden State Parkway at milepost 25.6 at 2:22 p.m.
According to Sgt. Stephen Jones of New Jersey State Police, troopers received a report of a one-vehicle accident at the Upper Township milepost.
They found a 2005 Isuzu Ascender, sport utility vehicle, driven by James Curtis, 62, of Absecon was northbound at the time and, for an un-known reason, the vehicle ran off the right side of the highway, struck a guardrail and overturned.
The vehicle was carrying six people at the time of the accident.
Tonya Curtis, 37, of Egg Harbor Township was pronounced dead at the scene.
James Curtis and his wife, Catherine Curtis, 69, of the same Absecon address, sustained substantial injuries, and were flown to Cooper University Hospital, Camden.
Three children, in the rear seat, a girl, 5, boy, 8, and girl, 14, were transported to Shore Memorial Hospital, Somers Point with various injuries.
Jones said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
