ATLANTIC CITY– The county E.M.S. Task Force was activated at around noon today to assist in a mass casualty bus crash in Atlantic City, county Emergency Management Director Frank McCall said.
At 11:30 a.m., a Tropicana bound tour bus collided with at least one vehicle in the east bound lane of Route 40 at West End Ave, Atlantic City police Lt. Charles Love said.
Over 20 people including the driver of the bus, which departed from New York City, were injured. The driver of the bus was among the most seriously injured. Love said the man was ejected through the windshield and is currently listed in critical condition at Atlanticare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.
Jennifer Tornetta, a spokeswoman for Atlanticare, said three of their hospitals received patients from the crash. Eleven of the injured were transported to City campus in Atlantic City, two of which were trauma patients including the bus driver. Three patients were taken to Mainland campus in Galloway and three were taken to their satellite emergency department in Hammonton.
Shore Memorial Hospital’s spokesperson in Somers Point said they received patients, however did not have the number of patients they received immediately available.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
