Coast Guard: Cap Beatrice Did Not Collide with Lady Mary

By Jack Fichter

CAPE MAY — The Cap Beatrice, a large container ship, registered in Liberia, did not hit the fishing vessel Lady Mary that sank 65 miles off the coast March 24 claiming the lives of six crewmembers.
The Cap Beatrice was inspected Sunday May 24 in Philadelphia by U.S. Coast Guard and state Marine Police investigators.
The hull was examined by divers. Cap Beatrice crewmembers were interviewed by investigators.
No evidence was found indicating the Cap Beatrice hit the Lady Mary, according to Petty Officer Chris McLaughlin.
The fishing boat and container ship were within one mile of each other at the time of the sinking. A collision with another ship is among the theories of what sunk the Lady Mary.
A Marine Board of Investigation hearing in Cape May is expected to resume shortly.
