Cape May City Firefighters Rescue Couple From Grounded Sailboat

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

CAPE MAY — A couple in their mid 30’s were rescued by Cape May firefighters on Wednesday, April 14 when their 35-foot sailboat lost power and ran aground off Jefferson Street.
Deputy Fire Chief Richard Lundholm said firefighters initiated a standing rescue plan for water rescues when they received the call shortly before 11:30 p.m., which included a response by the Coast Guard and the Townbank dive team.
Firefighters arrived on scene and launched a rescue boat however the couple was able to walk back to shore with firefighters, Lundholm said.
The dive team was recalled however the Coast Guard continued to the scene.
The couple had mild hypothermia but were not injured Lundholm said. They both refused treatment on scene and were taken to an area motel.
Lundholm said Towboat USA was en-route to salvage the vessel.
