Boom Snags Route 50 Wires, Utility Poles

By Harry B. Scheeler Jr.

PETERSBURG — Route 50 was closed from Tyler Road to Dennisville-Petersburg Road (CR-610) as several utility companies responded to repair damage caused by a tractor trailer on Aug. 29 in early evening.
According to State Police, a tractor trailer from R.G. Gorden and Son Construction of Richmond, Va. was traveling north on Route 50 hauling an aerial work platform.
When the truck went around a bend a few blocks south of CR-610, the boom section of the platform swung out to the right. As the truck continued to travel north, the boom took down four utility poles, several street signs, and a portable electronic message signal used to caution motorists of roadwork.
The Tuckahoe Fire Department, Upper Township Rescue Squad and the state Department of Transportation responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.
The accident is under investigation by Trooper Lowry of the Woodbine Station.
