AVALON – Detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Unit and members of the Avalon Police Department are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred Aug. 25 in the area of 32nd Street and Dune Drive in Avalon, Cape May County Prosecutor Robert L. Taylor and Avalon Police Chief William McCormick announced Aug. 26.

The preliminary investigation revealed that on Aug. 25 at approximately 6:40 p.m., a Sterling Acterra box truck, being operated by Frank Grosso, 59, of Ocean View, was traveling northbound on Dune Drive in Avalon. At the intersection of Dune Drive and 32nd Street the box truck made a turn onto 32nd Street and struck Ronald Stewart, 71, of Avalon, who was riding a bicycle.

Grosso immediately stopped his vehicle and emergency personnel were called to the scene. Stewart was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

A multi-jurisdictional investigation was started by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident and Major Crimes Unit along with detectives from the Avalon Police Department. The scene was subsequently documented and numerous witness interviews were conducted.

No charges have been filed at this time and Prosecutor Taylor and Chief McCormick report that this is an ongoing investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office and the Avalon Police Department.
