By Herald Staff

RIO GRANDE – An alleged drunken driver crashed into a tree and fled the scene of the accident in the wee hours of Feb. 15. The tree was flipped onto its side with its roots visible. The accident occurred on Maryland Avenue behind the Rio Grande Shopping Center.
According to Middle Township police, the driver of the vehicle, identified as Thomas Bradley, 27, of Rio Grande, was driving his Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound on Maryland Avenue at 1:34 a.m. when it left the roadway and entered into the opposing lane of traffic, jumping a curb and crashing into a tree.
Officers responding to the accident found the vehicle unoccupied. After a brief search, police found Bradley inside his home. He had sustained minor injuries from airbag deployment, but refused treatment said a police spokesman.
Bradley was charged with DWI; refusal to take a breathalyzer test; leaving the scene of an accident; reckless driving; failure to wear a seat belt; failure to report an accident; and failure to maintain lane.
After being processed at police headquarters he was issued summonses and released.
