RIO GRANDE — An early morning crash that tied up traffic for more than five hours and caused power outages was related to an alleged domestic violence incident.
According to Middle Township police, an investigation into the accident resulted in charges being brought against one of the drivers.
A report from Middle Township police stated officers responded to a call of a motor vehicle accident on Wildwood Boulevard at 6:24 a.m., Wed., Feb. 15.
Upon their arrival on the scene, officers found an overturned green Pontiac, with two oc-cupants, Mary Houston, 62, of Green Creek and Paul Alexander, 37, of Rio Grande, inside the vehicle. A white Dodge Caravan, driven by Jean Kascinski, 36, of Green Creek, was found off the road, in the marsh.
Houston, driver of the Pontiac, was removed from the wreckage by using Jaws of Life equipment. She and Alexander were airlifted to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center and are reported in stable condition.
Kascinski was taken to Cape Regional Medical Center via ambulance for minor injuries.
An initial investigation revealed that both vehicles were traveling eastbound on Wildwood Boulevard when they made contact, causing the Pontiac to leave the road, strike a utility pole and flip over onto its roof. The Dodge Caravan left the road, landing in the marsh.
Further investigation revealed the incident was related to an alleged domestic violence incident. According to a police spokesman, Kascinski rear-ended the Pontiac in an alleged domestic violence dispute, causing it to strike a utility pole. Kascinski’s Caravan then drove off the highway, into the marsh.
The accident caused a utility pole to be snapped in half, causing power outages in some areas. Utility workers from Atlantic City Electric replaced the pole.
Kascinski was charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of assault by auto, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane and uninsured motor vehicle. She is being housed in the Cape May County Correctional Center in lieu of $50,000 bail.
