By Herald Staff

WILDWOOD CREST — Multiple 9-1-1 calls to Wildwood Crest Police Department Sun., July 31 at 9:16 p.m. reported an accident at Crocus and the beach. Those reports told of a vehicle, traveling at a high rate of speed that had driven through the fencing at the street end and onto the beach.
When officers arrived, they found a vehicle “imbedded in the dunes,” according to a release.
Officers found that the vehicle, a 2005 Mercury sedan had struck the curb, become airborne, crashed through the beach walkway, went about 136 feet into the dunes and came to rest there.
The driver, Mary A. Monaco, 66, of Hollywood, Fla. sustained minor injuries in the incident.
Officers determined that Monaco was allegedly intoxicated, and placed her under arrest for driving while in-toxicated.
She was transported by Wildwood Crest Rescue to Cape Regional Medical Center for evaluation. A pedestrian, standing on the beach walkway at the time of the accident, sustained minor injuries after being struck by debris.
The vehicle was severely damaged, and had to be removed from the dunes by a front-end loader.
Monaco was charged with assault by auto, reckless driving, open container in a motor vehicle and failure to stop or yield.
Cpl. Anton Smolka and Detective Mark Tomlin investigated the accident.
