ERMA – Members of the Lower Township Police Department, Erma Volunteer Fire Company and Lower Township Rescue Squad responded to the intersection of Seashore and Breakwater roads for a four-car motor vehicle crash, including an overturned vehicle, at approximately 5:46 p.m. Sept. 8.
Upon arriving to the area, officers located three disabled motor vehicles and an overturned fifth-wheel camper, still attached to the vehicle that had been towing it.
During the investigation, it was learned that an ambulance from the Lower Township Rescue Squad was traveling eastbound on Breakwater Road responding to a medical emergency call. While proceeding through the intersection of Breakwater and Seashore roads, with emergency lights and siren activated, the ambulance collided with a fifth-wheel camper that had been traveling southbound on Seashore Road.
As a result of the collision, the fifth-wheel camper and the vehicle that was towing it, crossed into the northbound lane of Seashore Road and struck a Mercury Grande Marquee and then a Jeep Cherokee, before finally coming to a stop. The Mercury Grande Marquee and the Jeep Cherokee were both stopped at a green traffic signal facing north on Seashore Road, yielding to the ambulance.
Minor complaints of pain were reported by two of the four drivers, however, all parties involved signed refusals for additional treatment at the hospital. All vehicles involved in the accident were towed from the scene.
Seashore Road, from Breakwater Road to Tabernacle Road, was temporarily closed and re-opened after the investigation. Members of the Erma Volunteer Fire Department assisted with making the vehicles safe and with detouring traffic around the accident scene.
The accident is still under investigation by Patrolman Walker, Patrolman Flitcroft, Cpl. Hartman, and Special Officer Campbell.
