NEWBOLD, LARRY E.

NEWBOLD, LARRY E. Larry E. Newbold, age 87, of Cape May Court House, NJ, passed away at home on November 14, 2023. Larry was born on May 18, 1936 in Crosswicks, New Jersey to Alfred and Dorothy (Kirby) Newbold. He is survived by his children Glenn Newbold (Rosemary), Wendy Cacioli (Robert), and Scott Newbold (Patti) and his granddaughters Erin and Lauren Newbold. He is predeceased by his cherished wife Arria (Batchelder) Newbold and much-loved sister, Jean Bullock. A self-described farm boy, Larry spent his childhood hunting, fishing, and exploring the countryside with his beloved dog, Corky. Larry attended high school at George School in Newtown, Pennsylvania. He went on to graduate from Rutgers University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. After graduation, Larry served for four years as a pilot in the Air Force. He flew many types of aircraft, but his favorite was the Lockheed T-33 jet. It was there that Captain Newbold developed his "need to speed". While serving, Larry met and married the love of his life, Arria. They were wed on December 27, 1959. They resided at Dover Air Force Base where their first child Glenn was born. In 1962 Larry began his long career as the Cape May County Agricultural Agent, a faculty member of Rutgers University. The passion for his job and his community led to many notable accomplishments. He was instrumental in establishing and growing the county's campground industry converting former gravel pits to a recreational destination and revenue stream for Cape May County. Larry organized volunteers to fight beach erosion by planting beach grass. This work led to the establishment of the USDA-Cape May Plant Materials Center and a newly certified beach grass. He also lent his talents to local radio stations, doing hundreds of spots on conservation, gardening, and pest control to build awareness of the resources that the extension office could provide. For many years, Larry helped run the county 4-H fair and led its BBQ crew. The fair became a Newbold family endeavor and a cherished shared memory. In 1998, after 36 years of dedicated service he retired as a full professor. Larry remained an ardent advocate for protecting natural resources especially clean water. He was a fierce environmentalist who continued to fight against ground water contamination, "forever chemicals", ocean dumping and overdevelopment. He was never shy about voicing his outrage to anyone with ears up until his final days. As a dedicated and loving family man, Larry found so much joy spending time with his granddaughters and taking care of his family and friends. He also enjoyed cruising around for yard sales in search of treasures. There was always a sparkle in his eyes as he described his latest finds and attempts to restore them to their former glory. Also an avid hunter, he relished his time in a deer stand and enjoyed spotting deer off local roads in between hunting seasons. He was a passionate man who did not hide his feelings – often found tearful at both sad and happy occasions. Larry's big heart, personality, and humor will be deeply missed by family and friends. There will be a visitation held at Radzieta Funeral Home, 9 Hand Avenue, Cape May Court House, NJ on Saturday, December 2nd from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A private burial will be held on a later date. His final resting place will be next to his wife, Arria, at the Newbold family plot at the North Crosswicks Cemetery in Hamilton NJ. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to American Farmland Trust https://farmland.org/donate/ and displaying your "No Farms No Food" bumper sticker just like Larry.
