Wildwood Hosts 49th Dutch Hoffman Event

Cape May Beach Patrol came in second after Longport in the first race which was the Doubles Competition where the rowers had to row out into the ocean and return. Strong winds coming from the west made it difficult to row out into the ocean.

WILDWOOD – The 49th Annual Dutch Hoffman Lifeguard Championship took place on Lincoln Avenue and the Beach in Wildwood July 27. Longport won the team title with 12 points. 
The Dutch Hoffman race consisted of a doubles row, rescue board paddle, swim, two mile run, and singles row. Frank “Dutch” Hoffman was a native of Wildwood. He served on Wildwood’s Beach Patrol from 1923 to 1962.
In 1938, he was appointed lieutenant/director of the Wildwood Beach Patrol. Since 1969 Wildwood has hosted the memorial race in his memory the last Friday of July.
