Motorcyclist Killed, Passenger Injured in Route 9 Crash

RIO GRANDE – A North Cape May man was killed when the motorcycle he was operating struck an SUV on Route 9 near the former Social Services building.

Middle Township Police Department released a statement saying that at approximately 1:56 a.m., Aug. 26, officers responded to the area of Route 9 and Church Street in Rio Grande for a motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle and a sport utility vehicle.

The driver of the motorcycle, a 24-year-old North Cape May man, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, a 23-year-old North Cape May woman, was transported to Cape Regional Medical Center for her injuries. There were no injuries to the occupants of the SUV.

The Middle Township Fatal Crash Team, Major Crimes Unit, and Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office are currently investigating the crash. Assisting with the investigation were Lower Township police, New Jersey State Police, Rio Grande Fire Company, and Green Creek Fire Company.

Due to the investigation, Route 9 was closed for approximately four hours.
