GALLOWAY – The Wildwood Catholic High School boys basketball team won the coveted Cape-Atlantic League title, 63-57 in overtime, to Atlantic City on Feb. 24 at Stockton University.
After winning Feb. 21’s key semifinal game 61-53 against defending champion St. Augustine Prep, the No. 2 Crusaders landed themselves in the championship against top-ranked Atlantic City. When these two last met on Feb. 8, Atlantic City won in a close one-point game at Stockton.
The Vikings held the led for three quarters of the game until the Crusaders rallied late in the fourth to bring the game within one score. Sophomore Taj Thweatt scored the tying basket then Blane Rossell hit a deep three-point shot to give Wildwood Catholic their first lead of the game.
Close back and forth play in the final minute sent the game to overtime tied at 55-55.
Sophomore Jacob Hopping was key for the Crusaders in the extra period as he scored seven of his nine total points to lift the team to victory.
Caleb Fields led the team with 20 points with Chuck Fields adding 13 points. Thweatt recorded ten points and a game-high 20 rebounds.
The win gave the Crusaders their second program C.A.L. title in school history with the first dating back to 2014. The Crusaders stand at 24-2 overall heading into the state playoffs.

In the girls C.A.L. final, Mainland Regional defeated defending champion Ocean City in overtime, 41-39.
The Mustangs won the school’s first ever title and remains undefeated at 25-0 before the start of the state playoffs.
Danielle Donoghue led the Red Raiders with ten points in the loss. The team stands at 18-8 heading into the post-season.
