This is the time of year when most hornets begin to hibernate for the winter, but that isn’t the case with a certain type of hornet located in Upper Township New Jersey. In fact, the Upper Township Green Hornets Wrestling Team is the exact opposite. They come out of hibernation this time of year and begin their quest to sting everything in their path. Head Coach Frank Sannino enters his 11th season of coaching the Upper Township Wrestling Team and he is very optimistic about the upcoming season. The Hornets lost some great talent to graduation from last years undefeated (8-0) varsity team including, team captains Joe Garcia and Wes Tosto, Dave Tosto, Donnie Repici, and Jimmie Repici. However, the majority of their varsity line up will be returning including Josh Roman, Pat Tull, twins Wyatt and Graham Tolson, Andrew Siteman, Aiden Leypoldt, Jackson Smith, Frank Bennett, Gavin Paolone, Alex Loesch and team captains Braydon Castillo, and Heaven Phelps. There are also a number of younger Hornets looking to make their mark this season including Nate Bellwoar, Madden Rossi, Clay Compton, Mike Trettner-Young, Bobby Drewnowski, who in his first season as an Upper Township wrestler last season, placed 4th in the state at the USAW NJ State Championships and Logan Hayes who placed 8th at the USAW NJ State Championships. Upper Townships Wrestling program has consistently increased in size each of the last 10 seasons and Coach Sannino is expecting the wrestling team to surpass 100 wrestlers this season for the first time in team history.
The team is also gearing up to host its two competitions at the Upper Township Middle School. The 13th Annual Upper Township Green Hornet Holiday Open Wrestling Tournament, which draws over 400 competitors and 2,000 spectators from 5 states, will be held on Saturday, December 9th, and the 2nd Annual Upper Township Rec Team Stinger Duals team competition will be held on Sunday December 10th.
The Upper Township Wrestling Team will be hosting a free, no obligation “TRY IT OUT” practice for anyone interested in joining the team, on Thursday November 9th from 6-715pm and will be accepting registrations throughout the month of November. Upper Township Wrestling is open to all boys and girls regardless of athletic ability or experience.
