STONE HARBOR – Come out of your shells and join the fun at the 12th Annual Turtle Trot 5K Race and 2 Mile Fun Walk in Stone Harbor, NJ on Sunday, May 29, 2011. Get your exercise in the morning and then spend the rest of the day relaxing on Stone Harbor’s newly replenished beach or visit the wonderful shops in the Stone Harbor Business District.
“The Turtle Trot marks the start of another healthy summer in Stone Harbor and is one of our most exciting and popular events of the year,” said Stone Harbor Tourism Director Joann DelVescio. The entire community gets involved, with many area businesses supporting the race through sponsorships and donations of prizes.
The event’s unique name comes from the frequent sightings of the Diamondback turtles crossing the town’s roads in search of an area to nest. This year, organizers expect 400-500 participants, and encourage everyone to get involved by joining the race or walk, volunteering at the event or cheering on the participants as a spectator.
Contrary to its name, the Turtle Trot is a fast course through Stone Harbor’s scenic, residential neighborhoods. Cash Prizes are awarded to the top male and female overall, the top master male and female 40 and over, and awards to the 3 top males and females in all age categories. The 2 Mile Fun Walk is an untimed fun event for all ages. Moms, Dads and kids are welcome! The first 300 registered will receive the official Turtle Trot t-shirt. There is ample parking, restrooms, accurate flat and fast 5 K course and water on the course.
The race begins at 95th Street and First Avenue and day of registration begins at 6:45 am. The 5K starts at 8 am and the 2 Mile Fun Walk at 8:05 am.
Registration is $25. Kids 12 and under $15. Checks should be made payable to the Borough of Stone Harbor and mailed to: Turtle Trot, 9508 Second Avenue, Stone Harbor, NJ 08247.
