SEA ISLE CITY — The fourth annual Tri-For-Our-Veterans Triathlon will be an ideal way to begin the 2011 summer season – by remembering our nation’s veterans and disabled military personnel.
The competition, which will take place on Sat., May 28, will benefit two veteran’s organizations: The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund and Sea Isle City’s VFW Post 1963. A number of military teams will once again compete in this worthy event, including racers from the United States Naval Academy the Marine’s Team Semper Fi.
This year, the triathlon will be held in memory of Matt McCulley, the event’s first organizer, who passed away suddenly in 2010. An avid triathlete himself, McCulley first came up with the concept of a triathlon in Sea Isle City after recognizing the tremendous sacrifices made by America’s veterans. “I have only one goal: to give something back to the veterans who have fought in previous battles and those who fight in today’s wars,” McCulley said.
Sea Isle’s fourth annual Tri-For-Our-Veterans Triathlon is open to male and female competitors, age 14 and up. The racecourse will consist of a π mile ocean swim, a 12.3-mile bike race and a 3.1-mile run. There will also be a duathlon competition, which includes biking and running only. Awards will be distributed to male and female competitors in several divisions. All athletes will receive tee-shirts and other gifts.
Volunteers are needed to ensure that the Tri-For-Our-Veterans Triathlon runs smoothly. Volunteers will have a variety of “people friendly” responsibilities, including distributing water bottles to athletes, keeping the race course clear for competitors, directing pedestrians and traffic control.
Anyone interested in volunteering should email patriciaannlynn@gmail.com or visit the triathlon’s website, www.piranha-sports.com/race144.aspx and click on the “Volunteer Now” tab. The event’s website is also where athletes can pre-register online.
The triathlon, which has many local, regional and national sponsors, begins a 7 a.m. at JFK and the Beach. However, all racers and volunteers should take their positions by 6:30 a.m. For additional information about the Tri-For-Our-Veterans Triathlon, email bridgettesumma@gmail.com or phone 610-888-0885.PHOTO CAPTIONS:
