Tech’s Girls Swim Finishes Season with Impressive Wins

Confidence from the Lady Hawks swim team sustained itself throughout their season.
Cape May Tech earned impressive wins over Cedar Creek (109-58 Dec. 3) and Lower Cape May (132-32 Dec. 13). Overall, the team tallied a winning record against tough competition while achieving a 4-2 record in the Cape Atlantic League (CAL). Despite early-season defeats, Cape May Tech achieved and maintained a positive momentum.
“We had two really impressive meets this year that really stand out,’’ head coach Dawn Dudley said. “Our first was in the beginning of the season, with Middle Township (a 100-70 loss Dec. 17). This was the jump start to our season, with over eight personal best times. The girls were really excited, and it showed in the pool.
“The second meet that was impressive was our first (NJSIAA South Jersey Group C Sectional Tournament) playoff meet, in the second round, against Oakcrest. Almost every girl that swam achieved their best time, and we scored a lot higher than we anticipated. That meet took us to round three of playoffs (Cape May County Tech lost to top-seeded and eventual Group C champion Haddonfield Feb. 10).’’
Several swimmers emerged as leaders for the Lady Hawks this winter.
“We had a lot of leaders this year,’’ Dudley said. “We did have four designated captains (Cameron Muir, Ruby Redmond, Jayne Seitz and Nicole Wright) that led extremely well this year.
“I would say that two girls really shined this year though. One was Ruby Redmond, who trained really hard this year. She requested to be trained harder, and that showed a great example to the other girls.
“Cameron Muir was another excellent leader this year. She showed up to every single practice early and was one of the first in the water almost every day. She encouraged teammates to do the same while keeping a great report with them.’’
Other than the team’s captains, various swimmers impressed the coaching staff with improvements.
“I actually had three girls in the sophomore class really shine this year, Teeny Bruno, Jacque Jamison and especially Emie Fredericks,’’ Dudley said. “All three girls were challenged with different events and each improved almost every single meet throughout the season. Their dedication and hard work was shown each day.
“Emie was chosen as Most Improved Athlete this year on our team. She not only improved in every one of her events, but she also swam all new events and gained a school record in the breaststroke.’’
