Baseball:
Ocean City (21-6)
The Ocean City baseball team finished 21-6 under head coach Craig Mensigner. The Red Raiders earned the Cape-Atlantic League American title and the South Jersey Group III title. Senior Sean Mooney was a key pitcher for the team, allowing just ten hits and no earned runs on the season before the Group III final game on June 11. With his season performance, Mooney earned First Team recognition in the C.A.L. American Conference as a pitcher. Teammate Dominic Fiorentino also earned First Team recognition as an outfielder. The Red Raiders were ranked second overall in New Jersey.
Wildwood (19-10)
The Wildwood baseball team finished their season with a 19-10 record under head coach Rich Hans. The Warriors finished third in the Tri-County Conference behind rivals Gloucester Catholic and Pennsville. Brothers Chris and Andrew Mormile were stand-out players for the team this season. Senior Chris Mormile had two notable career milestones; hitting his 100th career hit and pitching a no-hitter in a state quarterfinal play-off game. Junior Andrew Mormile led the team with 93 at-bats, 40 runs scored and 37 hits. Both players were chosen to play in post-season tournaments in South Jersey.
Lower Cape May (16-12)
The Lower Cape May baseball team finished the season 16-12 under second-year head coach Nick Core. The Caper Tigers finished fifth in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference and made a first round appearance in the state play-offs. Significant pitchers for the team included senior Josh Meyer and junior Courtland Dickinson. Seniors Mike Downes, Colin Donahue, Orren Stewart and Bobby Smith were also a driving force. The Caper Tigers will be returning key players next season including Brennan Ray and Ryan Hill.
Cape May Tech (14-12)
The Cape May Tech baseball team finished the season 14-12 under head coach Matt Pleasants. The Hawks finished sixth in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference. Leading pitchers were senior Hunter Tomlin and sophomore Carson Denham. Robert Edmunds, Paul Edmunds and Kyle Eppright were additional key players for the team. The Hawks appeared in the first round of the Group I South play-offs, as well as the semi-final round of the New Jersey Technical Athletic Conference tournament.
Middle Township (12-10)
The Middle Township baseball team finished the season 12-10 under head coach Chuck Dougherty. The Panthers finished fourth in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference and appeared in the first round of Group II South play-offs. Stand-out players included First Team C.A.L. All-Stars Matt Harris and David Salvo. Aaron Garcia, Zack Wyatt and Steve Burner earned Honorable Mentions. Harris was chosen to participate in the Carpenter Cup, an annual tournament featuring the Delaware Valley’s best high school baseball players.
Wildwood Catholic (3-18)
The Wildwood Catholic baseball team finished 3-18 under head coach John Coyle. The Crusaders finished eighth in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference. The team was comprised of mostly underclassmen, with seniors Joe Alosi, Justin Feraco and Kyle Krause. Younger teammates Mike Sharkey, Erv Bogan, Phil Pfaffman and Joe Sciolo were key players for the team this season.
Softball:
Wildwood Catholic (19-6)
The Wildwood Catholic softball team finished 19-6 under head coach Matt Megines. The Crusaders finished third overall in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference behind rivals St. Joseph and Buena Regional. The team had eight freshman on the team this season; six of them in the starting line-up. Mia Capozzoli and Kaci Gallagher were the two Crusaders’ seniors. The young team made it all the way to the South Jersey Non-Public Group A final game. Players to look out for next season include pitcher Emily Cimino, Anna Mae Peterson, Jayla Jamison and Lauren Sorensen.
Middle Township (16-9)
The Middle Township softball team finished the season 16-9 under head coach Lauren Ruef. The Panthers finished fourth in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference and made it to the quarterfinal round of the South Group II play-offs. Maddie Ellis and Kayla Cubernot were selected to the First Team of the C.A.L. All-Stars. Ellis also hit her 100th career hit earlier in the season. Pitcher Lacy Abrego earned Second Team C.A.L. All-Star while Grace Fox, Sophia Ellis and Sam Grassi earned Honorable Mentions.
Ocean City (9-10)
The Ocean City softball team finished 9-10 under head coach John Bruno. The Red Raiders finished sixth in the Cape-Atlantic League American Conference and appeared in the first round of the group play-offs. Key players included senior Rachael Zeides, junior Keani Hindle and freshman Jackie Nesi. Zeides hit her 100th career hit earlier this season.
Lower Cape May (7-17)
The Lower Cape May softball team finished the season 7-17 under head coach Kelly McConnell. The Caper Tigers finished seventh in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference. Key players included Aubenee Arseanux, Kassidy Cluff, Melissa Brown and Karli Lafferty.
Cape May Tech (6-16)
The Cape May Tech softball team finished the season 6-16 under head coach Barry Kopf. The Hawks finished eighth in the Cape-Atlantic League National Conference. Key players included senior Jaclyn Gehring, Danielle DeRitis and Taylor Patterson. Gehring hit her 100th career hit earlier this season.
Wildwood (1-13)
The Wildwood softball team finished their season with a 1-13 record under head coach Teresa Cunniff. The Warriors’ only win this season came from a 5-3 victory against Cape Christian. Patrice Cafiero had ten strike-outs in that game while Natalee Colon went three-for-three with one run scored and two RBIs.
Cape May – Governor Murphy says he doesn't know anything about the drones and doesn't know what they are doing but he does know that they are not dangerous. Does anyone feel better now?
