Athletes from Wildwood, Wildwood Catholic, Middle Township, Ocean City and Lower Cape May took part in their respective sectional track meets over the weekend with many earning spots in the top ten of their events.
In the boys Non-Public South B, Wildwood Catholic finished second overall as a team with 76 points. Charles Fields had an outstanding day, finishing first in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Caleb Fields finished fourth in the same events and the long jump. Rakim Coyle finished second in the boys long jump and triple jump, third in the boys 400-meter dash and was a part of the first place 4×100-meter relay team consisting of Aiden Saul, and both Fields’.
On the girls side, Julia Sorenson finished fourth in the 1600-meter and the 3200-meter runs while Joelle Osborne finished third in the 400-meter hurdles.
In the boys South Jersey Group I, Wildwood’s Leo Zaccaria placed sixth in the 1600-meter run and seventh in the 3200-meter run. Dennis McAllister placed eighth in the 800-meter run. Maddie McCracken placed eighth in the girls 1600-meter run.
Middle Township and Lower Cape May competed in the S.J. Group II meet. Middle Township’s Gary James Nagle placed second in the boys’ pole vault and Sean Geary finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles. Lower Cape May’s Will Berger finished seventh in the 1600-meter run and sixth in the 3200-meter run while teammates Dennis Cluff finished seventh in the javelin and Tony Kapurelos finished eighth in the discus throw.
For the girls, Middle Township’s Kate Herlihy finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. Lower Cape May’s Christina Adams placed third in the javelin throw and fifth in the 800-meter run.
In S.J. Group III, Ocean City’s Kevin King placed third in the boys 110-meter hurdles while teammates Paul Short finished fourth in the 800-meter run Jesse Schmeizer placed fourth in the 1600-meter run.
On the girls side, Alexa Palmieri, Casey McLees and Michaela Baker each placed in the top ten for the 1600-meter run. Palmieri also finished second in the 3200-meter run with teammates Alexa Weber finishing fourth and McLees finishing fifth. Sophia Gresham finished third in the girls long jump.
Area Playoff Results
In softball, top-ranked Wildwood Catholic earned a bye in the first round and won 13-1 at home against No. 9 Holy Spirit in the quarterfinals of the Non-Public South B tournament on May 24. The Lady Crusaders hosted No. 5 Holy Cross on May 29. (Results too late for this edition.)
The Ocean City girls lacrosse team made the program’s first ever appearance in the S.J. Group III final at state perennial power Moorestown. The Red Raiders fell 18-3. They finished their outstanding season at 17-2 overall and repeated as Cape-Atlantic League champions.
