MILWAUKEE — The Chicago Cubs selected 18 pitchers, six infielders, four outfielders and two catchers in the first two days of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft June 8, according to the Cubs website, including Lower Cape May Regional High School graduate Matt Szczur.
He was a round five pick and is a two-sport star at Villanova University on baseball and football. According to the Cubs, Szczur was the first .400 hitter for Villanova this season since 1997, batting .443 (77-for-174) to earn first-team All-Big East honors, according to the Cubs’ website: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com
His batting average was fourth highest in school history, and his .392 career average ranks fifth all time for the Wildcats. Baseball America ranked Szczur as the second-fastest runner among all college position players in the Draft and the 19th-best center fielder among all Draft-eligible players, according to the Cubs.
According to the website: Villanova.com, during Szczur’s high school career: he earned four varsity letters in football, baseball and track & field; 2006 FOOTBALL HONORS: Team captain; First team Cape Atlantic League quarterback, First team South Jersey Group II Defensive Back by the Courier Post; First team South Jersey quarterback by the Philadelphia Inquirer; Two-time Gazette Leader Player of the Year; 2006 TRACK & FIELD HONORS: Captain; Set a school record in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.66; Won the 55 meter dash and the 200 meter dash at the Toms River Invitational; 2006 BASEBALL HONORS: Captain; First team All-State; Atlantic City Press Player of the Year; Gazette Leader MVP; First team All-Cape Atlantic League; First team All-South Jersey; First team All-Group III by the Courier Post; Set a new South Jersey record by hitting .681; Had 140 total career hits; Drafted in the 38th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
