SWAINTON – The sixth annual Brendan Borek High Tides Memorial Fund Golf Tournament will be held April 29 at the Avalon Golf Course, 1510 Route 9, in Swainton. Registration begins at 11 a.m. Tee time, which is a scramble format, is at noon.
Over the past five years, the golf tournament has raised over $22,000, according to organizers. Last year’s event was a huge success with lots of laughs and great competition, all for an exceptional cause, they said.
The Brendon Borek High Tides Memorial Fund, a grassroots organization, helps to relieve the financial stress that families endure when a child is ill, according to the group’s mission statement. Certificates for food, mortgage assistance, reimbursement for out-of-state transportation and lodging for medical treatments, as well as a wish-granting program that has granted numerous wishes over the years, are all part of the organization’s offerings.
Summer camp, prom expenses and trips to Disney World, just to name a few, have been covered with funds raised by the group, organizers said. And all was possible through the generosity of residents, visitors and businesses in Cape May County, they said.
Since 1992, over 150 families have benefited from “Brendan’s Fund,” which provides assistance during the duration of a child’s illness and recovery, at times extending over a period of years.
In order to raise funds for families that have an ill child, the group is currently looking for golfers and hole sponsors for its upcoming event. Gift baskets, gift certificates and donations of all kinds for raffle prizes are also being sought.
The golf tournament has become very popular, organizers said, anticipating a large turnout. The entrance fee of $110 includes greens fees, cart, beer, T-shirt and dinner. For $35, attendees can join the event and just have dinner.
