CAPE MAY – Have you ever played the sometimes genteel, sometimes raucous, game of croquet?
Join the Friends of the Physick Estate on the lawn of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. this summer and join a team or gather your own for a rousing game of croquet on Wednesdays, July 8, July 22, Aug. 5 and Aug. 19, beginning at 10 a.m. Wear your summer whites! No experience is necessary and equipment will be provided, along with basic instruction.
The sport of croquet was born in the British Isles in the mid-19th century and soon migrated to the majority of English-speaking countries including the United States. The game of Backyard Croquet has been popular in America for more than 100 years, “as the ideal complement of garden parties, family gatherings, outdoor fund-raisers, and social events both raucous and elegant,” according to the United States Croquet Association.
Play is free and free parking is available. Individuals and teams are both welcome. Donations to the Friends of the Physick Estate are welcome.
The Friends of the Physick Estate is especially devoted to enhancing the collections of the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian House Museum. The Physick Estate has been lovingly preserved to its original splendor. The 18-room Physick House was built in the Stick Style of architecture, and has the trademark design features of renowned Philadelphia architect Frank Furness. The Estate provides an in-depth glimpse of the Victorian period and offers year-round tours and unique living history programs.
