SEA ISLE CITY– Philadelphia 76ers’ Ambassador of Basketball World B. Free recently brought the Sixers Summer Hoops Tour to Sea Isle City, where over 100 children participated in a morning of fun and entertainment. Now in it’s 15 year, the annual basketball clinic will visit 39 locations in the Philadelphia region this summer, spreading the word about the importance of education and teamwork while helping kids improve their basketball skills.
Free was joined by a team of coaches, who are currently making names for themselves in the world of college basketball. Also adding to the excitement of the event was Sixers Mascot “Hip-Hop” and Harlem Globetrotter Corey Rich, who wowed the youngsters with an exhibition of fancy ball-handling. Rich, 28, a Norristown, PA, native, attended West Chester University in Pennsylvania.
During the clinic, which took place at Sea Isle’s Dealy Field basketball courts and was hosted by the Sea Isle City Recreation Department, children were taught basic basketball fundamentals, including dribbling, shooting, rebounding and passing. Participants also enjoyed free water-ice compliments of Rita’s Water Ice of Sea Isle City. The event culminated with a pep-talk from Free, who encouraged the children to do their best in school, show respect for others and to always try their best in life.
Afterwards, Free stated how happy he is to be part of the Summer Hoops Tour. “The kids get so energized during this program,” Free said. “We want them to see the importance of teamwork and to inspire them to always do their best. This is an important time of life for them and now is when they learn how to pay attention and work together with others. God blessed me with a talent and a good family foundation, and for me it’s now all about giving back to the community.”
